The living fortified church - a new project in historical walls
Welcome to the best-preserved fortified church in Germany with a Renaissance church, halls from medieval times, changing exhibitions and the museum of fortified churches.
In the past few years the city of Ostheim had the church St. Michael and parts of the fortifications elaborately refurbished. The so-called Kirchhofschule (church yard school) was then turned into a cultural community centre that has housed changing exhibitions and events since the summer of 2008.
Besides the Steinerne Gaden (Stone Hall) next to the historical main gate contains a small but beautiful museum of fortified churches that is well worth a visit.
Both facilities are run on a voluntary basis by the club Freunde der Kirchenburg e.V. (friends of the fortified church) who strive to fill this historical site with life.
